AS Essay Question 1 – Introducing a Character

First part of homework (reading and annotation) to be completed by the next time we meet (Tuesday 9th September), and essay to be handed in to me at the lesson on Friday of B week (12th September).

See after the jump for the full title.

“The great butler… wear[s his] professionalism as a suit…He will discard it when, and only when, he wills to do so, and this will invariably be when he is entirely alone. It is, as I say, a matter of ‘dignity’.” In what ways do the first two chapters of Remains of the Day constitute an introduction to the character of Stevens?

I expect 2-3 sides of A4 in response to this question – I know I mentioned 4, but I think that 2-3 will be adequate for a full answer. If you wish to use the Lodge essay, Introducing a Character, (The Art of Fiction, pp 66-69) for reference, please feel free to do so, although I do not expect it as a matter of course.

Before you attempt the essay, please also read, and annotate fully, to the end of page 44. This should be completed by the next time we meet, on Tuesday of B Week, ready for class discussion.

As ever, please feel free to use the comments below to discuss between yourselves any aspect of this homework. Sharing is good (plagiarism is bad…)
